Anorexia Male

Many people are not aware that anorexia can effect a male as much as it does the female and there are statistics to prove it. Reports show that there are over 8 million people have been diagnosed with eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia). There are probably just as many, if not more, that have not been diagnosed yet. Of the 8 million diagnosed with eating disorders, 1 million of them are male. Another report states that one in every six people with anorexia are male. Still another report says that 10 percent of all people with eating disorders are male. Eating disorders are becoming more and more of a problem today because too much stress is put on the need to be skinny. Going on a diet because you are overweight is one thing but to keep losing after you have reached a healthy weight is not going to lead to anything but problems. Anorexia can damage all of the organs in the body and also cause death if it is not diagnosed and treated in time. Males are susceptible to our cultures just as much as the females are. They want perfect bodies too. If they want to compete in sports in school, get the girls, fit in at the office or on their job, they sometimes feel they have to lose weight and get in shape. They begin by eating less or not at all and excessive exercising. The problem with anorexia is that at some point and time it makes the mind think that you are still fat when you look in the mirror (and you do often), you see someone fat even though you are underweight. The mind plays tricks on you so you continue the routine and continue to lose weight until it has reached a very unhealthy level and your body begins to break down from the damage.

Most of the people diagnosed with anorexia are between the ages of 10 and 20 with the average being 17. People with anorexia can hide their signs and symptoms until they have reached the danger level and they faint, have dizzy spells, or other health issues that they can not hide. By the time the victim gets help it is sometimes too late to repair all of the damage to the organs of the body. Young minds do not know enough about the disease to see the dangers so they do not think it is bad for them until their bodies begin to tell them that something is wrong. The public needs to be more aware of the problem and educate their kids so everyone can work together to recognize the problem when they see it and possibly avoid it happening.
