Anorexia Nervosa Treatment St Louis

The doctors are well qualified to give treatments to those who are suffering from anorexia and other eating disorders. The problem is to get them there before the major damage to the vital organs becomes so bad it cannot be reversed. There are other treatment centers across the country so there might be one close to your area if you know of someone who needs help. There is much more help available today than there was about thirty years ago when the disease had not been studied enough to recognize that there even was a problem. Anorexia was first recognized as a problem in 1684 but was not recognized and diagnosed as a disease until 1870. There was not enough scientific research done on the eating disorder until the 1970's. In 1980 after Karen Carpenter (famous singer in the 70's and 80's) died from anorexia, scientists began to realize the problem was much more serious than they thought. Today there have been over 8 million people diagnosed with anorexia and other eating disorders and there are many more doctors qualified to treat the disease. Treatment of anorexia involves both medications and psychological help. It is also a long and expensive process to reverse the damage done to the body. Many people can not afford the treatment needed and do not have the medical insurance to pay for it.

It is believed that anorexia is caused by several different factors. There is either biological, psychological, or sociocultural factors involved or all of them. The person suffering from anorexia may have a family member who also has an eating disorder so it leads scientists to believe it may be partially genetic. There is usually a low esteem in the victim and may an obsessive compulsive personality which makes it easier for them to stay on a strict diet, and the victim may see the images of celebrities who are skinny and feel that they need to look like that too. There is so much peer pressure and social pressure on some that they cannot cope without losing a lot of weight and losing it as fast as possible. They do not feel good enough about themselves so they do what they think they have to in order to solve the problem not realizing they are only putting their life in danger and making the situation worse for them. Anorexia can damage every vital organ in the body especially the brain, heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs. If the anorexia progresses too far it may not be possible to reverse the damage done. The victim needs to seek help as soon as possible so the first thing they have to do is to admit they actually have a problem and many of them will not admit it until damage has already been done.
