Anorexia Women There are many women who have anorexia. There have been more than 8 million people diagnosed with anorexia and other eating disorders and about 7 million of them are women or girls. The other million are men or boys. The majority of anorexia cases are between the ages of 10 and 20 with the average being 17 years old. There are a few under 10 and quite a few over 20. People can become anorexic at any age. There are even senior citizens who are anorexic with the most of this age group being men. The most people who die from anorexia are in this age group. They have eating disorders and stop eating because of a death of a loved one, or they forget to eat, or some other reason. It is also reported that every five out of six anorexic victims are women. It surprises some people that men have the problem but they have problems, peer pressure and feelings just like women do. Some of them just do not know how to cope with it so they feel that losing weight is their answer. The problem is with people with anorexia is that they do not stop losing weight because they still see themselves as fat. They make excuses not to eat and they hide their thinness under baggy clothes or layers of clothing. They will not admit that they have a health problem until their health begins to fail them and there is damage to some or all of their vital organs. They need to seek medical help so they can be diagnosed with anorexia before they can begin treatment for it. There are two factors involved with treating anorexia. There is the need for medications and also there is a need for psychological help. Anorexia can be caused by biological, psychological, or sociocultural factors. Some people have a low self esteem and have psychological, or sociocultural factors. Some people have a low self esteem and have a lot of peer pressure so the feel the need to lose weight to make them feel better about themselves. They may have a family member who also suffers from an eating disorder so they may have a genetic factor thrown into the mis. The social culture shows skinny models, actors, actresses, singers, athletes and other celebrities that people look up to. This causes many people to feel that they have to look like that too in order to succeed in society and actually become someone important. The western culture puts too much stress on ‘skinny’ and not enough stress on ‘health’. The public needs to be educated on the dangers of anorexia and other eating disorders so they can help themselves and others and keep them from becoming another statistic.
