Anorexia is Caused by Your Self Esteem Anorexia is caused by your self esteem but this is only partly true. It is thought that it is a combination of at least two factors for one to become anorexic. One of the main reasons believed to cause anorexia is society. Our society is so bent on making the public think that they need to be skinny that a lot of our young people are influenced by society. They think they need to lose a lot of weight and be skinny before they can succeed or feel good about themselves. Society, low self esteem. Peer pressure, stress, and genetics are thought to be the reasons for the beginning of anorexia or other eating disorders. Two or more of these factors can make for a deadly combination and our young people are very vulnerable so they will try anything to feel better about themselves. We see ‘skinny’ models, actresses, actors, singers, athletes, and other celebrities in magazines, on television ans in person and many people think they need to look like them or they will never succeed at anything. Young people have idols they want to be like and it is not hard for them to convince themselves that they need to lose weight in order to be like them. The problem is that they try to lose the weight too fast and will do whatever it takes to lose it. They eat very little and skip meals and in some cases they exercise excessively too. They feel that faster is better but it ends up damaging their health. Anorexia can damage every vital organ in the body if it is not treated quick enough. Some of the damage may not br reversed. The brain, heart, liver, and kidneys are usually affected the most. There is also sometimes damage done to the lungs, bones, and other parts of the body. The severity of it depends on how quick the disease is diagnosed and treatment is begun. There are now some treatment centers, for eating disorders, across the United States and in Britain and they have qualified doctors who know how to treat the disease. Thirty years ago there was not enough research done on the eating disorders to know how big the problem really was and how dangerous it could be to your health. Anorexia affects more people between the ages of 10 and 20 than any other age group. However the majority of deaths from anorexia is males over the age of 70. Younger people have died from complications from anorexia too and also committed suicide. There are a few kids under the age of 10 who have been diagnosed with anorexia but it is rare.
