Imagaenes Anorexia Imagaenes or images of people with Anorexia can be found through a quick search on the internet. There are charts, graphs, statistics, pictures, stories, testimonials, and a lot of information about anorexia and other eating disorders. Anorexia has become a major health issue today because there have been over 8 million people diagnosed with anorexia and other eating disorders. The majority of these are between the ages of 10 and 20 with the average age being 17. One in every 6 six people diagnosed with anorexia are male. Some of those males are senior citizens who suffer from eating disorders. Anorexia can happen at any age. This figure surprises some people because most people think eating disorders affect only females. As a matter of fact, there are many males who suffer from anorexia too because they have peer pressure as well as stress from society to fit in or belong. Sometimes it involves athletics, jobs, or other activity in which the victim wants to belong. They do not have any self esteem or it is so low that they feel the only way they can belong is to lose a lot of weight. Their mind plays tricks on them so they exercise excessively and diet or refuse to eat so they can lose the weight as fast as possible. The big problem here is that the process damages the vital organs of the body. The victim tries to hide the signs and symptoms until they no longer can because their health begins to fail them. Sometimes the damage is so extensive that some of it cannot be reversed and the victim dies or suffers with health issues the rest of their lives. There are some well qualified doctors and psychologists who can treat eating disorders and there is much more hope for survival today than there was thirty years ago. In the 70's there was very little scientific studies done on eating disorders and it wasn’t until Karen Carpenter (well known singer in the 70's and 80's) died from anorexia that more studies were done on the subject. She had been taking treatments and it was thought that she was going to survive but she died of a sudden heart attack. The damage to her heart was just too great. There are images of other people who have suffered from anorexia on the internet and they will break your heart to see them and know how these people have suffered. They are not unlike the images we have seen for years of the natives in Africa in the National Geographic magazine. Just the thought that something like this exists in our society because of the peer pressure and the society we live in is shameful. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
