Lanugo Anorexia Some of the victims of anorexia may develop lanugo on their bodies. Lanugo is a soft hair that grows all over the body, even in places where there isn’t supposed to be any hair. Some anorexic sufferers may develop this symptom and others may not. Other symptoms of anorexia are anemia, abnormal blood count, dizziness, fainting, brittle nails, fatigue, lack of emotion, refusal to eat, trouble concentrating, osteoporosis, dehydration, low blood pressure, dry skin, constipation, hair that thins, falls out or breaks, cessation of menstruation (in females), decreased testosterone (in males), very thin appearance, anemia, heart problems, bone loss, lung problems, gastrointestinal problems, electrolyte problems, kidney problems, liver damage, and more. Anorexia can damage every vital organ in the body and it is important that the victim of anorexia get diagnosed as soon as possible so they can receive treatment. In some cases some of the damage can not be reversed if it has advanced too far before treatment is administered. There are two kinds of treatment necessary for anorexia. Both medications and psychological help will be necessary. There are over 8 million diagnosed cases of anorexia and other eating disorders. Of those 8 million, about 1 million are male. This figure surprises a lot of people because many believed anorexia was a woman’s disease. Another report states that 1 in every 6 people diagnosed with anorexia are male. The majority of people who die from anorexia are men over 70 years of age. The majority of people diagnosed with anorexia are between the ages of 10 and 20. The average age is 17. There are a few kids under the age of 10 who have been diagnosed with anorexia but it is rare. The fact is anyone at any age can suffer from anorexia. The three main causes of anorexia are biological, psychological, and sociocultural. Social pressure added to peer pressure, genetic factor, and low self esteem are a dangerous combination. If the victim sees nothing but skinny models, actresses, actors, and other celebrities and have a low self esteem of themselves, they may think the only way to get ahead or succeed in life is to lose weight and be skinny too. The problem is the way they lose weight and how much they lose. Anorexic victims think they have to keep losing weight because they see themselves as fat every time they look in the mirror no matter how underweight they may be. They will try to hide their anorexia by wearing baggy or layers of clothing. Most of the time there is a lot of damage done to the body before the victim admits they need help and begin treatment.
