Mary Kate Anorexia Mary Kate Olsen, one of the famous Olsen twins is suffering from anorexia. She has been having an eating disorder for a while but she continued to deny it until her health began to fail her. She finally admitted that she had a problem and has taken measures to get treatment. Hopefully she will make a full recovery. Reports show that it can take a long time and much treatment to bring someone out of the abyss that anorexia can take a victim to. Mary Kate’s sister Ashley is supporting her all the way. It is often thought that success and the need to be thin and stay thin can make a person feel that they have to stop eating or diet in order to keep their fame and continue in the limelight. Mary Kate and Ashley have been in the spotlight since they were eight months old when the starred in a sitcom on television. After the show ended the twins starred in movies about their adventures and investigations to solve mysteries not unlike the Nancy Drew Mysteries some people grew up with. The girls have been loved and admired for many years. Mary Kate has checked herself into a treatment facility so she can get professional help. She has many fans who are wishing her well and have been encouraging her. It has been reported that it is not uncommon for twins or at least one of them to become anorexic. There is a belief that part of the cause of anorexia comes from a genetic factor. Other reasons are peer pressure and low self esteem. In many cases the person does not feel good about themselves and they think that by losing weight, they can ‘fit in’ with the ‘in’ crowd and will not be teased or ridiculed anymore. Sometimes it is abuse that causes a person to become anorexic. The majority of people who suffer from an eating disorder are between 10 and 20 years of age. There are a few under 10 and some over 20 but the average age is 17. Sometimes the problems and pressures a teen suffers from during their teen years will continue into adulthood. There is the skinny models and actors/actresses we see everyday that make so many people feel that they have to look like that in order to be someone. The western world has caused this to happen and it needs to be dealt with before we lose our children to this dreadful disease. They need to understand that it is what is inside them that counts and not the outer surface. There is a greater number of victims with eating disorders today than ever. There are over 8 million people suffering from some form of eating disorder and anorexia is at the top of the list. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
