What is Anorexia

What is Anorexia? Anorexia is an eating disorder which is sometimes referred to as the stars or starlets disease. Because of the pressure on people to stay slim, many people go overboard with their diets because they can not control their eating habits to the right degree. Once they lose enough weight to be healthy and look good, they continue and before they know it, their weight loss has become a serious problem and has seriously affected their health. The magazines and television are full of skinny people and many people try to imitate them because they want to feel better about themselves. This has caused over 8 million people (over 7 million women and 1 million men) suffer from eating disorders. You might be surprised to see that men suffer from eating disorders too but they do have problems too, just as women do. Many of the men just handle their problems in a different manner but there are some who try to diet to feel better about themselves.

Many people get themselves in the situation and do not or can not get back out of it alone. They will lose weight by not eating much, vomiting what they eat, use laxatives or enemas. It is almost like a habit. After it reaches a certain point, they can not help themselves. They still feel fat even when they are underweight. Anorexia causes many health problems. There is danger of kidney, heart, and brain damage that is not reversible and there is danger of anemia, bone loss, lung problems, absence of menstruation (in women), decreased testosterone (in men), constipation, bloating, or nausea. Anorexia can cause damage to every organ in the body and it can and has caused death. The only way for you to survive anorexia is to get a doctors help and after doing some testing the doctor can diagnose the anorexia and recommend therapy and medications to help you get back in shape. It is a long hard road to recovery and there may be health problems that can not be fixed but if the doctors can save your life it is better than losing it. You have to admit you have a problem and want to get better. You have to begin to feel good about yourself and see yourself for the beautiful person you are inside, no matter what the outside looks like. Look for positive role models and not the skinny people in the magazines and on the television. Actors and actreses suffer from anorexia too and some have died from it. You have to realize that you are here for a reason and it is not to commit suicide by becoming anorexic.
