Who Discovered Anorexia Nervosa

If you do a search on the internet you will find out who discovered anorexia nervosa. Anorexia probably existed before this but in 1684 anorexia was described for the first time. Then in 1870 anorexia nervosa was described and diagnosed as a disease by Professor Ernest Lasegue of the University of Paris. However there still was not much study done on the disease until the 1970's and 1980's. Today there are anorexia and other eating disorder treatment centers in Britain and the United States. It was not until the 70's and 80's that scientists realized that anorexia and other eating disorders was such a widespread problem. The world needs to be educated better on the subject. The majority of anorexia are between the ages of 10 and 20 so kids need to be aware of the signs and symptoms as much as the adults do. There have been over eight million cases of diagnosed eating disorders and about one million of them are male. This indicates that men and boys also have the stress and peer pressure to be thin. People usually do not find out about the signs or symptoms of anorexia nervosa until someone has already suffered from it. The public needs to know about it before hand so they can help their friends or loved ones if or when it may happen to some of them. Preventative maintenance is very important and may save more lives.

We have our culture and society to thank for a big part of the eating disorders in the world. There is so much stress put on thinness. We see models, actresses, actors, singers, and other celebrities who are thin. Many people feel that they can not be successful in life unless they are thin so they try to lose as much weight as fast as they can. They stop eating or eat very little, make excuses not to eat, and sometimes exercise excessively just to drop the pounds. Many times when someone crash diets like this, they lose the pounds they wanted to then they feel that more weight loss is even better, so they continue their diet and somewhere it becomes a problem because there is too much weight loss and the victim begins to have health problems. They see themselves as still fat when they look in the mirror (and this is often). They try to hide their thinness by wearing baggy or layered clothing so no one will notice that they have a problem. When the victim experiences health issues that require medical attention there is often a lot of damage done to the vital organs of the body. Anorexia can damage every vital organ in the body so the victim needs to seek medical help as soon as possible. If the damage is too extreme, some of it may not be reversed. Some victims die because the damage is just too great to their system.
