Against Depression

Many people who suffer from depression are against seeking help because they do not want people to think they are crazy. Suffering from a form of depression is not a sign of being crazy. The cause of depression is stemmed from a chemical imbalance in the brain and it is thought that sometimes it is inherited so is beyond the recipients control. Different events in our lives can trigger depression in one form or another. The different forms of depression are Bipolar Disorder, Dysthymia, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and Post Partum Depression. There are feelings of anxiety, sadness, irritability, tension, lack of energy, feeling tired a lot, sleeping too much or too little, eating too much or too little, losing or gaining weight rapidly (five pounds or more per week), having difficulties making decisions and concentrating, feeling worthless, hopeless, and guilty, low self esteem, lack of interest in hobbies or activities you used to enjoy, and thoughts of death or suicide. If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, you should seek the help of a doctor. Some of these symptoms are symptoms of other illnesses so the problem needs to be diagnosed by a professional and the sooner the better

It is not shameful to suffer from depression. There are over 16% of Americans who are suffering from some form of depression so you are not alone. There are support groups you can join to help you through your depression as well as medications to aid in the balance of the chemicals in your body. After you have been diagnosed by the doctor that you are indeed suffering from a form of depression, the doctor can prescribe medication and/or therapy if they feel it is necessary. There are also ‘self help’ things you can do to aid in your recovery. Some of them are: try to get help with everyday chores, try not to be alone too much, talk to your friends or family about your feelings, Run an errand or take a short walk, join a support group of others suffering from depression, and stop putting pressure on yourself to get everything done. It is ok to let the dishes or laundry go once in a while and do them later or get help to do it.

You do not need to be against getting help for depression. You are not alone. About 16% of all Americans are suffering from some form of depression or another. Seeking help is the best thing you can do for yourself and for others around you. Your depression can effect others more than you know and if you do not seek help, there can be major problems in your family, work, or with friends. The sooner you get help, the better.
