Attacking Anxiety and Depression

Attacking anxiety and depression should be done as soon as possible. The sooner the problem is diagnosed and treatment began, the sooner the patient will be back to their normal routine. There is nothing shameful to have depression and you are not the only one suffering from it. Over twenty five million adults and eight million children suffer from depression. Researchers believe that depression is stemmed from a chemical imbalance in the brain and then different major events in one’s life brings on the onset of depression. Women are twice as likely to seek professional help and treatment and men are more likely to turn to alcohol or drugs. Men are also more prone to commit suicide because they will not get the help they need.

There are many medications available for depression. There are name brand, generic, and alternative medicines for the different types of depression and the different symptoms. There is also different types of therapy available. Hypnotherapy is used sometimes when the patient cannot take medications because of have other illnesses or other reasons. It has been known to work very well for people. Some of the name brand and generic medications are: wellbutrin, zoloft, adapin, doxepin, asendin, trazadone, elavil, marplan, nardil, Paxil, Prozac, Remeron, Serzone, Vivactil, and many more. The alternative medications available are Passion flower, Kava Kava, St. John’s Wort, Hyperforin, Valarian Root, and Clarocet. Many people prefer natural medications instead of synthetic man made drugs because of the side effects. Synthetic drugs often cause severe side effects that the alternative ones don’t. If you would rather have alternative medications, talk to your doctor about it.

The medications you get will depend on the symptoms you have and the type of depression you are suffering from. Some medications will work for some but not for others so it may take a trial of several different ones before the doctor finds the one for you. Some have side effects from some medications and others may not have side effects when taking the same thing. Everyone’s system is different so it is hard for the doctor to prescribe the right medication for you the first time around. If you are suffering from depression and have one or more symptoms you should contact your doctor so they can diagnose your problem and get you started on a treatment to get you back on your feet. Controlling depression and getting back to where you should be will take time, it will not happen overnight so it will take patience. Talk to your family and let them know what you are feeling and thinking. Have them help you with chores at home so you will not be so overwhelmed with work and feel guilty is everything does not get done. Take walks or go shopping just to get out of the house for a while and so not spend a lot of time alone.
