Chronic Depression

Chronic or severe depression is an illness that needs immediate attention. Depression is thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and certain events in one’s life triggers the onset of depression. With the proper professional help and medications, the ones who are plagued with depression, in one form or another, can control their depression. Depression is not only dangerous for those suffering from it but those around them suffer too and it can be dangerous for them as well. If a person is severely depressed they will do things they would not normally do, and the results of their actions can hurt others as well as themselves. Their doctor can diagnose the problem and get them started on the medication for their type of depression and for their symptoms they are experiencing. There is no cure for depression but there is help to control it so you can lead a normal life.

Some of the symptoms of chronic depression are: feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, guilt, feeling tired a lot, lack energy to do usual activities and hobbies, irritability, tension, change in appetite (eat more or less than usual), weight change (5 pounds or more loss of weight or weight gain within a two week period), change in sleeping habits ( sleeping too much or trouble sleeping) and thoughts of death or suicide. If you or anyone you know are having one or more of these symptoms it is suggested that you see your doctor so they can diagnose your depression if it is present and get you started on a treatment of medication and/or therapy.

Depression is nothing to be ashamed of but still many people refuse to see a doctor about their symptoms. Many try to ignore their problem and try to work their way through it by themselves. In cases of severe or chronic depression it is very important that they seek professional help. There are many medications for depression symptoms and it can be controlled but you have to first seek the help of your doctor. The doctor can get you started on the medication for your individual symptoms. It may take a few trial medications before you get the right one because what works for some does not work for others and there are side effects from some of them. You may get side effects from some that the next person doesn’t so it is a trial and error until the right one is prescribed for you. There are name brand, generic, and alternative medications. You can talk to your doctor about your preference to see if he thinks they will work for you. Many more people are turning to alternative medications today because in most cases, there are a lot less dangerous side effects.
