Dealing With Depression

There is more than one way people are dealing with depression. Some are ignoring it, some are not even aware that they are suffering from it, some take medications for depression, some take therapy for depression, some take medications and therapy. There are about 16% of all Americans suffering from depression and it is not something to be ashamed of. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and different events in one’s life can trigger the onset of depression. There are different forms of depression and many name brand, generic, and alternative medications to treat the symptoms and type of depression you are suffering from. You should not have to suffer with depression. Also, when you suffer, your family and anyone around you suffer too. If you seek help from your doctor, they can diagnose your depression and get you started on some form of treatment. There are many medications available but what works for some may not work for others so if you are taking medication for depression and having side effects from it, tell your doctor so they can get you on something else. Sometimes it takes a while to get you on the medication that works for you.

Some of the forms of depression are postpartum depression( after childbirth), seasonal affective disorder ( during certain seasons), dysthymia (mood disorder), and bipolar (depression and manic). Postpartum depression usually begins within the first few weeks after childbirth but can occur within a year. Seasonal affective disorder is a recurrence of the depression symptoms during certain seasons. Dsythymia is a mood disorder where the victim feels mildly depressed on most days over a period of at least two years. The symptoms are the same as for major depression only much milder. Major depression causes severe symptoms. Bipolar depression is a combination of severe depression and severe manic depressive. The victim can feel depressed one moment and outraged another. The severe mood swings cannot be seen in advance. There is no way of knowing when or how the changes in moods will occur. The people with bipolar disorder have highs and lows and their actions can cause trouble for those around them. If they do not seek help, someone could even get hurt or hurt themselves.

Some of the symptoms of depression are: sadness, irritability, tension, appetite disorder (eat more or less than usual), weight loss or gain (5 pounds or more in two weeks time), sleeping disorder (trouble sleeping or sleeping too much), restlessness, tired, cannot concentrate or make decisions, feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness, or thoughts of death or suicide. If you are having one or nore of these symptoms, it is best if you seek the help of your doctor so they can give you the treatment you need.
