Depression A normal functioning brain is one that operates every aspect of the body by sending nerve cells throughout the body and tells each part of the body what to do and how to react to any given situation. These brain cells or neurons send and receive messages to the brain using your brain chemicals which are called neurotransmitters. These chemicals are responsible for our emotional state so when the chemical messages are not sent properly between the brain cells, this will cause depression. This is not unlike a telephone when there is not a good connection, the message of the sender may not be understood right by the receiver. Depression is caused when there is a chemical change in the brains functions. There are many different types of depression caused by different events in our lives and the body can not handle the situations. Most people who have depression never get help although it is a treatable illness. It is an illness and it is not just in your head. It concerns the whole body and cause other health problems, in the most severe cases, if not treated. Depression can cause problems with your appetite, sleep, mood, work, and relationships with others. It can cripple your life if you let it and do not get the help you need. About 16% of Americans will experience depression at some time in their lifetime and it can affect anyone. The degree of how severe it will affect those with it depends on age and gender. Women are more likely to get depressed than men and it is believed the cause is hormonal changes brought on by puberty, menstruation, childbirth, and menopause. Men are more likely to try to get angry and hostile or try to crawl into a bottle of alcohol or turn to drugs. Suicide is another release that is more popular among men. Men are four times more likely to commit suicide or kill someone else than women. When they are depressed they do not realize it and think that their lives are falling apart for some other reason. Most men would ever admit to being depressed about anything. Depression can run in families for generations because genetics can play an important part in whether you get depressed or not. Some people may be aware that they are depressed and try to work their way through it without any help. In some cases this may work, most cases don’t. Depression has no single cause, it can be caused by a number of things and it can strike you without you even knowing what the cause is. There are medications which can help you get through your depression but the first step is admitting you are depressed and get the help you need. It is not a problem which can be ‘fixed’ overnight and may take a while but it can be controlled. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
