Depression Help

One of the first steps in getting help for depression is to admit that you may have a problem. Many people try to deal with it themselves or ignore it and just end up in worse condition and it will take a doctor longer to bring them out of their depression. While it may not be depression at all, it is better to seek a doctors advice if you suffer from any of the symptoms of depression. These symptoms are, sleep disorders (lack of or sleeping too much), appetite disorder (eating too much or no appetite), feeling sad, decrease or increase in weight, Having trouble concentrating or making decisions, low self esteem, thoughts of suicide or death, low energy level or high energy level, feeling slowed down or talking in low flat tone, slow response to conversations, restless, and there may be other symptoms. A depressed person may only have one or two of these symptoms. A visit to a doctor can diagnose if you have a form of depression or not and the doctor can prescribe therapy and/or medications, depending on the severity of the depression. You will not get better overnight so work with your doctor or councilor for as long as it is necessary to get you back on track. Depression is not your fault. It is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain which reacts differently to things that are happening in your life.

There are different forms of depression and the doctor will prescribe medications or therapy for the type of depression you are diagnosed with. Some of the events in your life which can bring on a state of depression is childbirth (postpartum depression), loss of a loved one, insecurity in life because of job loss or other events in your life not going as you might expect them to, pregnancy, menopause, and other reasons. Women suffer from depression twice as much as men do but the men are more likely to go undiagnosed and not seek the help they need so they become violent, hostile, or suicidal more than a woman does. Elderly people can suffer from depression and often go undiagnosed because no one takes the time to get them help and doctors will not take the time to test them for depression. Older people are less apt to talk about their depression to anyone so it goes untreated.

The treatments available for depression are therapy and medications. There is alternative medications for depression and there are many prescription medications for depression. Some people require only therapy in mild cases of depression. In more severe cases, therapy and medications combined may be required. It may take a while for your doctor to find the right medication for you. They do not all work the same for everyone.
