Depression Self Help

If you are suffering from a form of depression or are bipolar, there are things you can do to help your self through it. You can learn all you can about your particular depressive disorder and find out what triggers it each time you have an episode. You can set up a system so you can keep track of your medications so you do not forget them or take too many. You might want to join a support group. Your doctor can tell you if one would be beneficial for you and possibly connect you to one.

If you are suffering from depression and do not have a psychologist or psychiatrist your doctor may be able to recommend one for you if it is necessary and medications alone are not enough. Psychotherapy (‘talk therapy’) may be helpful as well as medications. Ask your doctor about psychotherapy and if it might be helpful for you. It is important that you talk to your doctor and tell them all of the symptoms you are experiencing. Many times bipolar is mis-diagnosed because the doctor is not aware of all of the symptoms and there is no blood test for bipolar disorder.

If you are suffering from post partum depression there are some helpful tips to help you cope with it. You need to consult a doctor and get medications to help you but there are also some things you can do yourself to help too. Post partum depression is brought about from the after effects of childbirth and the hormonal changes in the woman’s body. Do not put a lot of pressure on yourself to get things done. You can not do everything so ask for help from other family members. Take a nap when the baby is taking one if possible. Ask for help with the everyday chores of housecleaning, cooking, laundry, even feeding the baby, etc. Do not spend a lot of time alone. Talk with other mothers because they know what you are going through. Join a support group for women suffering from depression. Your doctor may be able to recommend one for you. If you are suffering from depression and are pregnant, the same help can be found for you. Do not make any major changes in your life if you are pregnant and suffering from depression. There are some medications that should not be taken if you are pregnant so discuss the side effects of any medications prescribed for you.

Proper diagnosis is important as well as the proper medications and therapy. Medications work differently on different people because of their body make up so what is prescribed for your friends or other family members may not be the proper medications for you so make sure you seek help from a professional.
