Depression Self Test

There is a self test questionnaire that is devised so you can identify some of the common symptoms of depression and will help you when you discuss it with your physician. You might even want to take the test along with you to show the results to your doctor. There are sixteen simple questions for you to answer. Answer the questions as they describe you in the past seven days. Yes or No answers will do.

Falling Asleep: I take more than sixty minutes to fall asleep, more than half the time.

Sleep During the Night: I wake up more than once a night and stay awake for twenty minutes or more, more than half the time.

Waking Up Too Early: I wake up at least an hour before I need to and can not go back to sleep.

Sleeping Too Much: I sleep more than twelve hours (including naps).

Feeling Sad: I feel sad nearly all of the time.

Decreased Appetite: I rarely eat within a twenty four hour period, and only with extreme effort or from coaxing from others.

Increased Appetite: I want to overeat at mealtime and in between meals.

Decreased Weight: I have lost five pounds or more in the past week.

Increased Weight: I have gained five pounds or more in the past week..

Concentration/Decision Making: I cannot concentrate or make decisions as I should.

Thoughts of Death or Suicide: I have thought of this/I have made plans or have tried to commit suicide.

View of Myself: I am critical of myself trying to find fault in myself.

General Interest: I have no interest in formerly pursued activities.

Energy Level: I do not have the energy to perform my usual daily activities.

Feeling Slowed Down: I am often unable to respond to questions with extreme effort.

Feeling Restless: Sometimes I cannot stay seated and need to pace around.

This test may help you see the symptoms of depression. It is not meant for the individual to self diagnose themselves. It can be used as a guideline to help you decide if you should seek professional help. If you have one or two of these symptoms, it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor. They can diagnose your problem if there is one and prescribe medication for you. Feelings of depression are caused by chemical changes in the brain which causes the brain to function differently. There are many types of treatment for depression and it will take a while to get back the normal balance you once had in your life but it can be done. It is not shameful to ask for help if you are depressed. In fact it is recommended because your depression will effect everyone around you and you can make life difficult for those you love and care for.
