Depression Support Group If you are suffering from some form of depression, there is a support group you can join to help you get through your problem. Being a member of a support group lets you know you are not alone and are not the only one who is suffering from depression. If you can talk to others who are suffering from the same thing, you can relate to what they are going through and visa versa. It helps in your recovery if you know there are others there who knows and feels what you are going through. Sometimes just telling family members and talking to friends is not enough because while they understand that there is a problem, they do not feel it and cannot quite grasp the full effect of it on your life. Just like being pregnant, if you have not gone through pregnancy and childbirth, you can not fully understand what women who have experienced it, have been through and felt. Depression can have devastating effects on the one suffering from it and only those who are suffering from it or have suffered from it in the past can know what they feel like. There are different forms of depression and some of them are Postpartum Depression (after giving birth), Bipolar Disorder (extreme manic and depression), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD- Excessive, ongoing worry), Seasonal Affective Disorder (recurring depression during certain seasons), and Dysthymia (mood disorder). Some of the symptoms of depression are tired a lot, restless, change in appetite, change in weight, sleeping disorder, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, trouble making decisions and concentrating, lack of energy, decrease in interest in activities or hobbies, thoughts of suicide or death. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you should seek help through your doctor. The doctor can run a few tests and diagnose your depression and prescribe the proper treatment, medication, and/or therapy for you depending on the type of depression you are suffering from and the symptoms you are having. There are many name brand and generic medications for depression, plus there are alternative medications which can help depression too. More doctors are turning to some alternative medications because they are realizing that they have far less side effects, if any, and are not as dangerous as some of the prescription drugs. There is also Hypnotherapy which can help in a lot of cases. The ‘self help’ things you can do to help yourself is to join a support therapy group, talk to family members about your feelings, ask for help to do the chores around the house and if you do not feel like finishing a job, (like dishes, laundry, etc.) let it go for another time, learn as much as you can about your condition so you can better understand it, recognize what triggers the onset of the depression, track your symptoms, and set up a system to help you keep track of your medications.
