Menopause and Depression

Menopause can trigger bouts of depression in many women. It is a normal symptom of menopause. It is believed that 8% to 15% of all menopausal women experience some form of depression. It is most likely to strike during perimenopause ( phase before menopause). Some believe that the cause of the depression is that the women just cannot cope with the idea of going through menopause, while others believe it is due to hormonal changes. When a woman is going through menopause their body goes through many changes. Their levels of estrogen, progesterone, and androgen are constantly changing and when their hormones drop, they experience times of sadness and hopelessness so if some experience a severe drop, it could result in depression.

Hormonal Replacement has been recommended for women going through menopause for years but now it is debatable. The hormone replacement causes a lot of side effects so it is just not recommended for all women. It has been brought to light in recent years that hormonal replacement may cause breast cancer or heart attacks. Some women have chosen the alternative route and are now using alternative all natural medicines for their menopausal symptoms. Hot flashes and other symptoms can be controlled with alternative medicines which have no side effects. Some women suffer from other health conditions so it is not recommended that they use hormonal replacement. Talk to your doctor to find out if hormonal replacement would be the choice for you. Find out all you can about hormonal replacement before you make your final decision. The doctor can only suggest hormonal therapy to you, they will not pour it down your throat. If you do not feel safe taking it, do not take it. You might even want to get a second opinion.

Alternative medicines have gained a lot more respect over the past ten years and now many doctors are even recommending them. Most prescription medications are manmade and contain ingredients which can do more harm than good sometimes, so many people are reverting to the all natural supplements because they have no synthetics or other harmful ingredients added to them. They are also much cheaper than prescription medications. If you are suffering from depression of any form, ask your doctor about alternative medications. There are some very good ones for depression. Clarocet, Passion Flower, Kava Kava, St. John’s Wort, and others are being used. These are some that our ancestors have used for years and the scientists are finally beginning to believe that they have healing properties in them after all. The main thing is that if you are experiencing depression of any kind, get some help so you can begin treatment and get your life back on track as it should be. You do not have to suffer from depression.
