Overcoming Depression Overcoming Depression will take a while and it will, in most cases, require professional help along with medications, and/or therapy to help you get through it with the least amount of suffering. There are many things you can ‘self help’ yourself but a professional doctor should be contacted so they can diagnose the type of depression you may have and start a treatment for you. The ‘self help’ , medication, and /or therapy works hand in hand to control your depression and now with cognitive therapy, you can rest assured that the depression will not return. Cognitive Therapy is an eight session group therapy that will get you through your depression and prevent future occurrences. There is no reason for anyone to suffer from depression. There are over twenty three million American adults suffering from depression and about eight million children. You are not alone as you can see. There are therapy groups which can help you by sharing your feelings and symptoms and listening to others who are going through the same thing you are. There are many forums on the internet that are geared toward Depression and the members are people who are suffering from depression themselves. You can get a lot of support from these outlets. Some of the other self help things you can do is to learn all you can about the type of depression you are suffering (you can learn a lot of this at the therapy sessions or in the forums or by searching the internet, or your local library). Talk to your family about your feelings and ask them to help out a little more at home with the chores. Take a walk everyday or go shopping just to get out of the house for a while. Try not to be alone very much because it only gives you more time to think negatively about yourself. That leads to another suggestion. Try to fill your life with positive things and thinking. Replace the negative with a positive. Your cup is now half full, not half empty. Try real hard to be an optimist instead of a pessimist. You will be surprised how optimistic thinking can lift your spirits. With the proper help, many people who suffer from depression are overcoming their problems and getting back to their normal lives. You can too but you have to make the first move and seek help. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance you may have inherited so it is not something you could have prevented. When certain events in your life happen, they set off the onset of depression. Sometimes the loss of a loved one, childbirth, menopause, puberty, and other events can cause depression. The important thing is not what causes it, but that you get the help you need. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
