Severe Depression

People who suffer from severe depression have more nerve cells in the part of the brain that controls emotions according to researchers in UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. This is some of the first reports about the nerve cells and the brain associated with severe depression. Other previous findings about severe depression was the cause was thought to be due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. Researchers discovered that the portion of the thalamus portion of the brain which controls emotions is larger than normal in Major Depressive Disorder patients.

Patients who are suffering from depression show low levels of potassium, magnesium, and other essential vitamins and minerals in the body. There are many medications available for severe depressive patients and therapy as well. There are brand name and generic medications as well as alternative medicines which work well too. The main object is to seek professional help if you suspect that you have depression of any kind and let the doctor test you and diagnose your problem and prescribe the proper treatment. You should begin your treatment as soon as possible. There is no quick fix for severe depression so be prepared for it to take a while and tell your doctor of any changes or side effects you are having from the medications. There are many medications for different depression symptoms and if one isn’t working for you, the doctor can switch them for you. What works well for some, may not for others so it may take a while to get the right one for your system.

Some of the symptoms of severe depression is depressed mood, lack of interest in or pleasure in activities or hobbies they previously enjoyed, eating disorders (eating more than usual or less than usual), rapid weight loss or weight gain ( five pounds or more in two weeks), sleep disorders ( trouble sleeping or sleeping too much), restlessness, tired a lot, inability to concentrate or make decisions, low energy level, low self esteem, thoughts of death or suicide. If you are having one or more of these symptoms, it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor. They can diagnose your condition and get you started on a treatment to fit your needs and this may include therapy as well as medications, depending on the severity of the situation. There is help for you and you are not alone with your depression. There are support groups where you can go and talk about your feelings and you will see that others are going through the same thing. The important thing is to get help as soon as possible so you can be on the road to recovery.
