Type of Depression

If you think you may be suffering from depression but are unsure of the type of depression, see your doctor and they can diagnose the type you have and prescribe medications and/or therapy if necessary. There are some tests the doctor can run and determine if you are in fact suffering from depression and what type you are suffering from. The important thing is that if you are suffering from one or more symptoms of depression of any type, you can get help if you contact your doctor. There are many prescription medications (brand name and generic), or alternative medications, or therapy available for depression and the sooner you begin treatment, the sooner you can get back to your normal activities that you enjoy. You are not the only one who is suffering from depression. About sixteen percent of all Americans suffer from some form of depression. There are support groups you can join where the members are suffering from depression just like you are. These groups can be a lot of help to you because you not only see first hand that you are not alone, but talking about your feelings and listening to others feelings can help you all by getting to the core of the depression. If you know what triggers the depression, you can begin to help yourself, along with the medications, get back on track.

Some of the different types of depression are: postpartum depression (after childbirth), dysthymia (mood disorder), seasonal affective disorder (disorder during certain seasons), and bipolar disorder (severe highs and lows). The symptoms of depression are feelings of sadness, irritability, tension, decrease in interest of activities or hobbies you usually enjoy, loss or increased appetite, weight loss or gain (five pounds or more in a two week period), sleep disorder (trouble sleeping or sleeping too much), restlessness, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness , guilt, low self esteem, lack the ability to concentrate and make decisions, or thoughts of death or suicide. If you suffer from any of these symptoms, seek the assistance of your doctor so they can help you by diagnosing your problem and getting you some treatment started.

Some of the medications cause side effects and some of them will work for some but not for others so your physician will have to prescribe one which they feel will work for you without side effects. If you have side effects, let your doctor know so they can get you on something else. There is also hypnotherapy and alternative natural medications which have proven to help depression so you might want to discuss them with your doctor. Depression not only effects you but it effects everyone around you so it is important to get the help to get rid of the depression as soon as possible before it causes problems between you and your family or anyone you know.
