Diet Pill

You see the ads everyday almost everywhere you turn. You seem them in print in newspapers and magazines. You see them on TV and you see them on billboards. Yes they are the long list of pharmaceutical companies that claim they have the best diet pill on the market. Diet pills claim everything from they can help you feel more fit, to they can increase your energy to they can melt away the pounds. With more than 60 percent of Americans overweight, the diet pill industry is now a multi billion-dollar industry.

Diet drugs can offer a quick and easy way to lose weight. No dieting and no exercise. What could be better? But how do these diet pills really work? Diet pills come in several forms including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.

Prescription diet pills such as Xenical are only available with a doctor’s prescription. These pills are regulated and approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and are carefully monitored by the prescribing doctor.

Over the counter diet pills do not require a doctor’s prescription and can be purchased by walking into your local grocery store or pharmacy. These are also regulated by FDA standards. In 200, the FDA mandated that diet pills not contain the active ingredient phenlypropanolamine (PPA). Evidence showed that PPA could increase the risk of stroke.

Herbal supplements are also available without a prescription and can be purchased at your local pharmacy or drug store. You can find a wide variety in health food and nutrition stores as well. Herbal supplements are considered to be food products instead of drugs by the FDA. They are made from all natural ingredients and therefore have minimal to no side effects.

Diet pills work in different ways depending on their main ingredients. Appetite suppressants work on the part of the brain known as hypothalamus which block chemicals that make you not feel full. So you don’t feel so hungry and eat less.

Fat Blockers inhibit the action of an enzyme called lipase. With a lipase inhibitor in effect, a percentage of the fat ingested is removed from the body through bowel movements instead of being broken down and absorbed.

Some over the counter diet pills such as Dexatrim once used a powerful combination of Ephedra and caffeine to help people lose weight. But in 2033, the FDA banned the selling of pills containing Ephedra because there was evidence of increased heart attack risk.

Prescription diet pills are not intended for the casual dieter, the ones who need to lose 10 or 20 pounds. They are made for those who are significantly overweight which means those who are 30% or more over their ideal weight. Prescription pills are also not used for children under 16 years of age.

As with most medications, there are side effects to taking diet pills. Severity and effects vary to ingredients. Fat blockers remove excess fats through the intestine; they also cause cramping, gas and diarrhea. Appetite suppressants stimulate the nervous system, which can increase blood pressure and heart rate. And herbal diet pills even though natural still have side effects.

Hopefully this article has at least shed some light into the world of diet pills. And always remember to consult your doctor before trying and diet pills.
