Hoodia Weight Loss The Bushmen tribe of South Africa has used Hoodia for thousands of years to control hunger pains when food was scarce. But the powerful plant was not widely known in the U.S. until the 1960’s. They discovered that chewing on this cactus like plant would help them avoid feelings of hunger when they went on long hunting expeditions to hunt for food. The Hoodia plant grows in the hot desert of Kalahari. The plant grows to a height of 6 feet or more. Though it looks like a cactus because of its prickly spines, it is actually member of the Aloe family. By the 1990’s, scientists have discovered that the key ingredient in the Hoodia plant, P57, was actually what was responsible for suppressing appetites. In 2004, Hoodia had become the latest diet fad and was even featured on popular shows like 60 Minutes when reported Leslie Stahl traveled to South Africa and tried Hoodia and reported that it did in fact control her hunger. Phytopharm, the company that owns the right to P57, has done extensive studies on Hoodia. Now since you cannot have a patent on a plant, Phytopharm owns the patent on the molecule P57. Phytopharm has done a huge clinical study with 2 groups of subjects. One group was given Hoodia and the other was given a placebo. The group that was given the Hoodia had decreased their calorie intake by 1,000 calories a day. To break this down, the average male consumes 2600 calories a day and the average female consumes 1900 calories a day. There is about 3500 calories of energy stored in one pound of body fat. So if you burn an extra 3500 calories, you will lose one pound of fat. So the Hoodia subjects were eating 1000 calories less per day. So if they did that for 3.5 days, they would have eaten 3500 less calories (3.5 x 1000). So in 3.5 days, they would have lost one pound of fat. The solution is simple, consume less food and less calories and you will lose weight. Now, you still need to eat. You obviously can’t starve yourself. But with Hoodia, you will not have those uncontrollable cravings and you won’t eat more than you need to. Hoodia is not a drug and contains no stimulants, ephedra or caffeine. So you can use it for long tem use if you wanted, but it is not recommended. It is best use for short term use instead. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
