Weight Loss Diet Pills History of Diet Pills The burst of weight loss diet pills into the market 30 or 40 years ago made the world believe in radical solution to weight loss. People fighting obesity much sought to solace in these prescription diet pills like any other binge eating than looking for a real solution. In our quest to weight loss, diet pills need to be understood in broader terms and also in specific to their effects on health. Some examples of weight loss pills There are currently nine weight loss drugs available in the market. However, most of them work by activating the central nervous system by suppressing appetite. Classic examples of such anorectic drugs are: Phentermine, Adipex, Didrex and Phendimetrazine. The other category increases the metabolic rate leading to increase in calorie burning. These are normally known as thermogenic drugs and are available without a doctor's prescription. Could diet pills harm our body? The answer is unfortunately "yes". They are taken in extreme cases of obesity with a BMI over 30. So naturally doctors can only have the right to prescribe such weight loss products. These medicines are monitored and recommended for use once the doctor has given a clean chit. This means that a person's blood pressure, heart condition etc. are thoroughly checked and once found healthy can one go for such drugs. The dosage of diet pills is also monitored by medics and in case of severity they are immediately stopped. Hence the drugs are meant for short-term usage only. The side effects of the weight loss pills could be as harmful as: • Stomach cramps • Blurred vision • Anxiety • Allergic reaction • Dizziness • Tiredness • Could be severe like having heart pain or elevated blood pressure etc. However, with the right kind of doctor's advice and discipline along with exercise and diet control one can lose up to 10% to 15% of the body weight and side effects could turn to history. What are the other alternatives that can be considered for weight loss besides diet pills? The best way to keep fat away is lifestyle modification, regular exercise and diet control. More of green vegetables, fresh fruits that contain more fiber and avoidance of fatty and oily food can keep one healthy and slim. Unlike prescription diet pills alternate non-prescription drugs or herbal therapies can be used with greater comfort and ease. But what we must keep in mind is the fact that each person has his or her own rate of metabolism. So do not expect results overnight. Maintain discipline and consistency in the program and do not go for drastic results at all. In the end fight obesity with a lot of joy and enthusiasm and not miseries and woes! The story of every "beautiful" girl or boy is etched with sheer determination, rigor and regularity-so happy counting calories as you enjoy the joyride to success!
