The stems of the ephedra plant was dried and made into a white powder. It has been used by the Chinese for over 5,000 years and is one of the oldest medicines on record. It has also been used by the Native Americans, Mexicans, and Mormons for many years. It was used for medicinal purposes. It the more recent years it has been used for weight loss, as an energy booster, as a sports performance booster, for asthma, lung or bronchial tube congestion, cough, common colds, fever, and other medicinal uses. Ephedra is a stimulant which acts much like adrenaline but is not as powerful as adrenaline. It does last longer than adrenaline in the system. Ephedra was banned in the United states because there were over 1,000 reports of hospital emergencies and at least 17 deaths from 1997 to 2006. Many products contained more or less ephedra than was listed on the labels of the products. Serious health issues were reported from using as little as 8 mg of ephedra.
