Mental Health Mental health and depression have become a major problem in the world. The population is living in such a fast paced world that between the stress of jobs, education, and family, it is just too much for some to handle by themselves without help. The Center for mental Health Services (CMHS) awards grants to states to promote a quality service for mental health systems so the individuals can receive treatment and support. Every state has a protection service for the mentally impaired. This included adults and children who have mental needs or children who have serious emotional problems. The idea is to get the help out to those who want to be a part of the community . On February 1, 2001, President Bush introduced the New Freedom Initiative, which was a part of a nationwide effort to allow people with disabilities to live in communities. It is also an avenue for those people to learn and develop certain skills, work, and choose where they want to live. In April, 2002, President Bush established the NEW Freedom Commission on Mental Health. This is to conduct a study of the mental health service which includes the private and the public sector providers. Information available for mental health services and treatments can be found by contacting your State Mental Health Agency. Your local DHS service can also give you some information. There are also some free publications available on mental health from the National Mental Health Information Center. You can do an online search and find this information or you can call the toll free number of the Information Center which is #1-800-789-2647. You can also send an email to nmhic-info@samhsa.hhs.gov, give them your mailing address and they will be glad to send you the information you request. You can also order the information online at http://nmhicstore.samhsa.gov/publications/ordering.aspx. People can request help themselves if they feel they need it or others can suggest they get help but the patient usually has to agree to it. If the patient is thought to be a danger to himself or herself or to others, a family member can have them committed either as an outpatient or inpatient. Check with your state to see what laws apply to your state concerning mental health and receiving treatment. Children can have stress, depression, and mental illness as well as adults. This can affect their learning, health, lead to drug abuse, the way they get along with their family, cause violence, and even suicide if not treated. Mental illness is more common in young people than many know . It is believed that the causes for mental disabilities in children is caused by biological and environmental factors. This means they may have the disability because of genetics, a chemical imbalance, or damage to the central nervous system. Environmental factors include exposure to toxins, violence, abuse and more.
