Home Computer Security The Security of your Home Computer is as important as the security of your home. The more secure you can make it, the better off you are. A good virus and trojan program is a must and there are several very good ones one can get. Some are even free. An extra firewall as well as the one installed in your system is also a good idea. Two firewalls working for your protection is much better than just one. Just as the guard in a business guards the entrance of the business, the firewall guards the entrance of your computer from the internet. Many little bugs and viruses try to creep in and will if the computer is not secure. Taking precautions when you read your email is important too. If you receive emails from someone you do not know, do not open them. Delete them immediately. Many viruses and bugs are spread this way. Also many are spread through attachments from friends if they pick them up through emails sent to them. There is no way of knowing if they contain the virus until the attachment is clicked on. This is another good reason to have a good anti-virus program. It will many times block the virus or notify you of it so you can avoid it by deleting the email before you click on the email. Some email services contain a virus protection with their service. Install and USE the anti-virus programs. It is a good idea to run the anti-virus program often if you receive a lot of emails or do a lot of surfing the net. Many viruses are embedded in the webpage and one does not know it. If you cannot afford the anti-virus programs who charge a fee, check into the free ones. There are some good free programs and any anti-virus is better than none. Two of the best well known anti-virus programs and trojan programs is Ad-Aware and Spybot-Search and Destroy. While they do not stop the virus or trojan from entering your system, they can scan your system and get rid of most of them for you. If you run them on a regular basis, the buggers do not have a chance to hurt your system or gather your information on your computer. It is always a good idea to backup all of your files in case of a computer crash. Many important files can be lost forever if they are not backed up on software discs so you will have them to upload again if necessary. There are also online sites who have space you can store your files in case of emergency. There are sites to store photos, information and just about anything you can put on the computer. These sites may charge a fee to store your information but a few of them offer space for free. All Text Copyright © Safety2005.org |
