Home Security

Home security is something everyone should think about but is sometimes the last thing on ones mind. In some cases it isn't thought about until it is too late. Sometimes there are a few inexpensive things one can do to make the home more secure and all it takes is a little of your time.

The first thing that should be done is a check on your home and the surrounding area. Check it in the daytime and also at night so you can see the improvements you can make to make it more secure. Sometimes just a few lights and a few bushes trimmed will deter the thief from entering your house. If there are no large bushes or the bushes close to the house are well trimmed so it is hard for them to hide behind and there is a yard light in front and back of the house, it helps. If the thief can not get to the house without being seen by the neighbors or someone passing by, they may not pick your house as their next hit.

Having a neighborhood watch also helps. Get to know your neighbors and if there are any unidentified person or vehicle attempt to enter your house and your neighbor knows you are not home, they can notify the authorities of any suspicious activity. Having a pet dog will sometimes help. When a dog is barking sometimes will alert the neighbors and possibly scare off the burgular. If you happen to be at home and see someone trying to break in or are sneaking around your house, if you have a key alarm to your vehicle, set it off. It will undoubtly scare them, possibly enough that they will leave and never come back.

Dead bolt locks are always a safety feature. Lights that are set on timers to come on and go off at different times is a good idea. Also have a remote set to turn on the television or a radio. Most of the time the burglar will not attempt to enter the house if he thinks someone is home. As a general rule, they do not want to hurt anyone, they only want to rob you. No amount of merchandise is worth a life. So the harder you make it for the burglar, the less likely he will come to your house.

If you are going to be away for an extended period of time or on vacation, it might be a good idea to get someone to house sit if you do not have any safety features on your house. Also it is a good idea to stop the mail and any newspapers you usually have delivered. A pile of newspapers in the driveway is a good indication that no one is home. Do not make it easy for them.
