Home Wireless Network Security

Home wireless network security is one of the most sought after security systems. It is very high tech and can be installed by the individual if it is done properly and not in a rush. Many people try to install it in a hurry and end result is problems ahead. There are a few steps which should be taken in order of importance to ensure a smooth working wireless network security system.

Change all administrator default passwords and usernames. Turn on WPA/WEP Encryption. All WI-FI devices support some type of encryption. Pick the strongest form of encryption that will work with your wireless network. The WI-FI devices on your LAN must share the identical encryption settings or it will not function properly. Next you need to change the Default SSID. Routers and access points use a network called SSID. Change the SSID when configuring your LAN.

Each piece of WI-FI has an identifier called the 'physical address' or 'MAC address'. Routers and access points keep track of the addresses of all devices connected to them. Disable the SSID broadcast because you do not want your network name broadcasted across the internet which it will do periodically if not disabled. Assign static IP addresses and turn off the DHCP on the router. Set a fixed IP address range and set each connected device to the same setting. WI-FI signals can reach across streets so position the router in the center of the home if possible to minimize the signal escaping outside. Then last but not least, turn off the newtwork when not in use. This will help keep outside hackers from getting in.

It has been a big help for the hardware and software vendors to come up with a variety of ways to allow the home personal computer user to share one internet connection between two or more computers. The computers must be networked somehow however. The computers can be connected together by using a coaxial cable phone wire or CATS cable. Also now it is possible to connect computers through the electrical wiring. The easiest way to do it though is to use wireless technology. Network cards and wireless routers make this possible.

Be smart about your wireless Networking and make sure you have done everything possible to make it as secure as possible because it is easy for someone to hack into your computer from the street. Take the basic precautions to make it more difficult for curious hackers from getting into your system. You can enjoy your wireless network as long as you have it secured to keep out the hackers. Do not make it easy for them.
