Diet Drug Phentermine The weight loss diet drug Phentermine is one of the top weight loss pills on the market today. While it is reported to have helped many people lose excess weight, it is not safe for everyone to use. The Phentermine drug was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be used by the obese to lose excess weight to prevent future health risks because of the extra weight. It was approved as an appetite suppressant and a stimulant for the central nervous system (brain and nerves). The Phentermine drug was one part of the two drug weight loss pill Fen-Phen which was taken off of the market in 1997 because of reports of valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension. The other drug was Fenfluramine or Dexfenfluramine. Fenflurimine remains off of the market but the Phentermine drug was allowed back on the market but now works alone without the fenfluramine. The Phentermine drug is closely controlled because it is an amphetamine and is addictive. The Food and Drug Administration states that the Phentermine drug should not be used for more than about twelve weeks and should be stopped gradually to prevent withdrawal symptoms. It is classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act. Many people can not safely use the Phentermine weight loss drug. Those who should not use it are those who have heart problems, high blood pressure, agitation, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, epilepsy, anxiety disorder, pregnant or nursing, have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, allergy of other sympathomimetic amines, or are taking certain medications. You should discuss the use of the Phentermine drug with your doctor before you decide to use it. Your doctor can help you decide if it is safe for you to use it. The possible side effects of the Phentermine drug are hallucinations, very high blood pressure, irregular heart beat, allergic reactions such as hives, closing of the throat, trouble breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, headaches, confusion, unusual behavior, nervousness, restlessness, dizziness, tremors, anxiety, insomnia, diarrhea, constipation, swelling of the legs or ankles, dry mouth, bad taste in mouth, impotence, or change in sex drive.
