Rehab Winehouse

Amy Jade Winehouse wrote and sings the song “Rehab”. Amy was born in Southgate community in Enfield, London. Her dad is a taxi driver and her mom is a pharmacist. Amy started a rap group, when she was 10 years old, called “Sweet-n-Sour which she described as “the little white Jewish Salt-n-Pepa”. This was short lived and at the age of 13 she received her first guitar. She was influenced by singers such as Elvis Presley, Carole King, Mahalia Jackson, Busta Rhymes, Prince, Beastie Boys, Teena Marie, Mos Def, Kiss, Madonna, Nas, The Shirelles, Sarah Vaughn, Minnie Riperton, Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Anouk, The Specials, Toots and the Maytals, and Thelonious. Amy comes from a family of jazz musicians. She listened to a lot of different types of music. A friend of hers, soul singer Tyler James, gave her demo tape to an A&R person and she was discovered and was professionally singing at the young age of 16. She is recording under the label Island/Universal and under the management of Simon Fuller’s management company.
Amy is an English soul, jazz, and R&B singer and songwriter and her debut album “Frank” was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2003. She is a two time Ivor Novello Award winner, in 2004 and again in 2007. Her award was for “Stronger Than Me” in 2004 and “Rehab” in 2007. She also won the Brit Award for Best British Female Artist in February 2007. Her “Back to Black” album was rated as one of the 12 albums on the 2007 Shortlist of the Mercury Prize nominees.
Amy has been a very busy young girl and has made her fame very quickly. In her song “Rehab” it sounds like she is asking for help and support because she has a drinking problem and is fighting demons within because she isn’t sure if she wants help but she knows she needs it. It appears that her dad and others are aware of her problem and trying to convince her to seek professional help by admitting herself into a rehab center. Whether she is talking about herself or someone she knows, it sounds like the words to the song are coming from the heart and is a battle for whoever it concerns.
Here are some of the lyrics to the song “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse:
They tried to make me go to rehab
I said no, no, no
Yes I been black, but when I come back
You won’t know, know, know.
I ain’t got the time
And if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab
I won’t go, go, go.
