Winehouse Rehab

Amy Winehouse wrote and sang a song called “Rehab”. It was a big hit and there have also been re-mixes from it by others. In the sone it appears that a girl is having drug and alcohol problems as well as boyfriend problems. The individual seems to have hit the bottom of the barrel and knows they have a problem but refuses to admit it. They seem to be crying for help but are not sure if they are ready for the change in their life. They are suffering and are depending on drugs and alcohol to get them through their problems but they only add to the problems.

Amy was born on September 14, 1983 in the community of Southgate in Enfield, London. She was born to a Jewish family who had a history of Jazz musicians. Her father is Mitchell Winehouse and he is a taxi driver and his mother is a pharmacist. Amy started her first group at the age of ten and called them Sweet-n-Sour. She sings soul, jazz, and R&B and she also writes songs. Her debut album which was released in 2003 was called “Frank” and it was nominated for the Mercury Prize. She is a two time Ivor Novello Award winner. She won in 2004 for her debut single “Stronger” and for the second time in May of 2007 for the first single “Rehab”. Rehab was taken from her album “Back to Black”. She won the Britt Award on February 14, 2007 for the Best British Female Artist. On July 17, 2007 Back to Black was named as one of the 12 albums on the 2007 shortlist of Mercury Prize nominees.

Amy had a very diverse range of music to influence her when she was growing up. She received her first guitar at the age of 13. She listened to Salt-n-Pepa, Sarah Vaughan, Teena Marie, Nas, Mos Def, Beastie Boys, Minnie Riperton, Dinah Washington, The Ronettes, The Shangri-las, The Shirelles, Elvis Presley, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Anouk, Toots and the Maytals, Thelonious Monk, Madonna, Kiss, Carole King, and Mahalia Jackson. This was quite a variety of music for a young girl to listen to. She had a friend, soul singer Tyler James, who gave her demo tape to an A&R person and she was discovered and began singing professionally at the young age of 16. She is signed under the record label Island/Universal. After her album was released, the songs “Pumps”, ”Rehab”, and “Wake Up Alone” were played on the radio and her album “Back to Black” went to number 1 on the UK charts.
