Iron Supplement The iron supplement is sometimes necessary if our blood is low on red blood cells. Low iron in our bodies could lead to anemia. When a woman becomes pregnant they need more iron in their bodies so in most cases the doctor will recommend they take iron supplements. Many times they will recommend daily vitamins with extra iron to their patients. Iron is one of the most abundant minerals on earth and when it is taken from plants or animals which contains iron we will absorb it into our systems after we eat the vegetables or meat. It is thought that about 80% of the world’s population have a deficiency of iron in their blood and 30% of those have iron deficiency anemia. There are two forms of iron, heme and nonheme. Heme iron is found in animal foods such as fish, red meat (such as beef), and poultry. Iron found in plants are known as nonheme. Some sources of the nonheme iron is beans and lentils. There are many more sources. Heme iron is absorbed into the body better but most dietary iron is nonheme. Signs of an iron deficiency anemia are, tired feeling, weak, decreased performance from normal everyday tasks, slow cognitive and social development in children, trouble maintaining body temperature, decreased immune function, and an inflamed tongue. Iron supplements are available in two forms, ferrous and ferric. Ferrous iron salts (ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulfate, and ferrous glutonate) are the best absorbed iron supplements. The amount of iron in a supplement is called elemental iron. There are multi vitamins with extra iron for everyday use. They supply the extra iron we need if our body is low on iron and according to the statistics it looks like most people are. There are many vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that we are not getting in the foods we eat so it is a good idea to use multi vitamins with iron to help get and keep our bodies healthy. Most of the foods we do eat are filled with preservatives, herbicides, pesticides, artificial ingredients, and other additives that are destroying our bodies, and the bodies of our children and grandchildren. It was just recently reported that we are not as healthy as our parents and grandparents and this is because of the unclean air we breath and the many chemicals in the unclean water we drink (some of it is in bottles) and the processed foods we eat. We need the iron supplements and the other natural supplements to help us get back into our bodies what we need to fight off the nasty things we have taken into our bodies. The first thing we all need to do is flush out our system by detoxifying our digestive system and urinary tract system so the antioxidants can begin to fight off the free radicals.
