Iron Supplements There are many different brands of iron supplements on the market and most doctors recommend iron tablets to pregnant women because their bodies use more iron and it will help prevent anemia. Many people become anemic because of low iron content in their body. Usually iron supplementation is done orally. Intravenous therapy is only used resorption is seriously compromised or when the patient can not swallow. In some cases it is necessary for a patient to take iron supplement permanently. There are some side effects from iron supplements. These are diarrhea, obstipation (blockage of the intestine), and abdominal discomfort. Side effects are usually less if taken after a meal but there is an increased risk of an interaction with other substances. The stools may become black from the iron but this is to be expected and is normal. There is nothing to worry about. The teeth can also become discolored unless you use a straw to take the iron. If the iron is taken intramuscularly it can be painful and a brown discoloration may be noticed in the injection area. It is very important that it is determined that the lack of iron is the cause of anemia before iron supplements are given. There are other causes for anemia such as chronic low grade blood loss. If children take iron tablets they may become intoxicated so they should be taken to an emergency room immediately. There are many other supplements that are used for other health issues. Some of them have mild side effects and others contain no side effects at all. There are supplements for the control of blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, respiratory system, circulatory system, prostates problems, weight loss, menopause, pain, vitamins and minerals of all kinds, skin, hair, and nails products, and many other supplements to help you keep your body in good health. There are supplements to help prevent viruses or diseases or keep them from becoming severe. There are antioxidants to help your body fight off nasty viruses. There are supplements to flush out the impurities from your system. There are supplements from A-Z for just about any health issue you might have. Supplements are becoming more popular because most of them do not have the serious side effects like the prescription drugs do. You should discuss the use of supplements with your doctor if you have health issues and if you are taking medications. Some of the supplements do not mix well with certain medications. If you experience any serious side effects from any supplement, contact your doctor as soon as possible. You can also report it to the health department in your area and the FDA Consumer hotline.
