Hoodia Research

There has been a lot of research done on the Hoodia plant. It all began back in 1937 when a Dutch Anthropologist was studying the bushmen of the Kalahari Desert and noted that they used Hoodia to suppress their appetite while on hunting trips. But it wasn't until 1963 that scientists at the CSIR, South Africa's national laboratory, began studying the Hoodia plant. Their studies showed that lab animals lost weight after they were given Hoodia.

In the mid 1970s there became an interest commercially and scientifically to use Hoodia as an appetite suppressant. By using the extract from the plant they could make a diet aid from it. So the research was on to find out what the secret ingredient was in the plant suppressed the appetite and to see if it could be duplicated in synthetic form. So for about 30 years research was done by the pharmaceutical research industry on the Hoodia plant and finally in 1997 the secret was discovered and a patent was applied for. The ingredient was named P57. Now the development was on for a new drug for weight loss.

In 1998 the clinical trials were started and on October 13th a collaboration was met with Pfizer, Inc to develop and sell P57 as a prescription drug worldwide. A manufacturing center was opened in South Africa to develop the Hoodia Gordonii. In March, 2003 a clinical study was done on 18 overweight males and the subjects proved that they reduced caloric intake and lost body fat in the 2 week study.

The Hoodia Gordonii was approved by the FDA however it was classified as a diet supplement instead of a drug because it came from an all natural plant. All that was needed was to put it into pill/capsule or other form. No drugs were needed to add to it for it to suppress the appetite and aid in weight loss. There have also been individual and private studies done on the Hoodia Gordonii and the results were the same. The subjects lost a substantial amount of weight in a short period of time and the subjects reported no side effects. This was a diet supplement that was ready for the world and the world was definitely ready for and needed it.

Research shows that in its natural form, the pure Hoodia Gordonii will suppress the appetite when the P57 enters the blood stream and enters the brain. While there it will fool the brain into thinking the stomach is full and will send signals to stop eating. Sometimes the user hasn't started eating yet but still has the full feeling so doesn't want to eat. Since the user doesn't eat as much or as often, there are less calories taken into the body and the end result is that the body will burn off the excess fat and the subject loses weight.
