Phytopharm Hoodia
Phytopharm is a phamaceutical company which has two different divisions. They have a phamaceutical division and a plant extraction division. It is in the plant extraction division where the Hoodia plant and other plant extracts are studied to find any properties that may be useful for diet supplements, functional foods and veterinary products. CSIR isolated the compound in the Hoodia Gordonii plant which contained the appetite suppresant properties and then obtained a patent and licensed P57 to Phytopharm. This is how the molecules named P57 were discovered in the Hoodia Gordonii plants. Studies there showed a loss in weight in the animals used and they did not die or have any side effects. It was agreed that the Hoodia Gordonii succulent was non toxic and was a natural appetite suppressant. Phytopharm joined into a joint venture with Unilever to develop the Hoodia Gordonii research and development. Unilever is one of the worlds largest food companies. Only Phytopharms Hoodia Gordonii products are verified to contain pure Hoodia Gordonii. Only Phytopharms Hoodia Gordonii has had extensive research done and has been proven to reduce calorie intake and in turn cause loss of body fat.
